Horse training learning resources
In this post, I will share some resources I've consumed in the past couple of years during my journey with horses. I've learned a lot from them and I continue to do so.
Books
Horses Never Lie
It is an inspiring book that looks at the horse and rider relationship in a different way. Conceptualizing two different relation types
- Alpha relationship
- Passive Leadership
Mark Rashid claims non-dominating relationship between a horse and rider is achievable. This kind of relationship is what I sought with horses from the first and after reading this book I see my self getting better at it.
Right after finishing the book, I added 2 other books of Mark to my reading list.
Complete Horse Riding Manual
The title suits the content. A book that covers all basic horse riding-related subjects although not that deep. From physical training for the rider and training for the horse, From rider posture on the horse to horse nutrition and conformation all of these and more are mentioned in the book.
Probably I will share some of my notes from this book here (in other posts).
Video tutorials
WarwickSchiller
I really like Warwick's videos and learned a lot from them. Currently, he doesn't upload many horse training videos but if you browse the old videos on his channel you will find many videos on horse training.
DUHorseman
Similar to Warwick on horse training and continues creating horse training videos. Both of them have free and paid horse training videos but as far as I've seen most of DUHorseman's free videos are not complete and sometimes it's annoying.
There is also Ryan Rose youtube channel which I haven't seen a a lot of videos from it but those I watched were good.
Other resources
Equestrian and Horses are two subreddits that I check from time to time and I learn from the community. There is also a homestead subreddit if you are also interested in farming and homesteading.
These are the resources that I think will be useful for horsemen regarding mostly on horse training. Will add to the list if anything comes to my mind or I may encounter it later.
